And now, the blog title should be sorted...

Ok, so a few tweeks here and there, Like a blog title... Adding images (everyone loves picture)Hopefully I'll get to grips with it! Its all a bit of a learning curve, but the best application i've used is cellspin (if you blog, are in a band, and have a broken computer, then its the best I've seen!)G'Night Johnny

And now, an Image!!

Well,This blog is more a test that anything else... You see, blogging on a mobile is a bit of a pest when you have to load the browser, select the blogger site, sign in etc etc.... On a computer, it seems painless, but on a phone; its a bit of a pain! And doubled up with the fact my little computer is under the weather, its been a nightmare! So I've geeked it for a few days, spent evenings trying to figure a way of doing it using applications and (hopefully) by jove I've cracked it!!So a thank you to Marty & Reno for jotting down thoughts and stories in my absence. (And for the record, I was awake the whole way home! I slept on the boat, in the poker machine room, on the ground beside a plug socket to charge my mobile! To be kicked awake by a seaman *heheheh*. I was too drunk to react, and was a bit of a bum about it)Aaannnyywaayyyy.... Let me know if this works guys, because if it does... It'll be blogs galore from here on in!You'res hopefully,Johnny

Ok I will, London!

Good craic drivin down in the van to Dubsville to get the boat and boy was it choppy, I thought I was gonna whitey my ring up! Then drove another 250 miles to Toddington with 1 stop on the way at Stratford where thanks to us some wee lad "win thee chuklit baah"... Some went drinkin while some slept!

Next day an early rise before we hit the Don, to a friend joint for a tasty breakfast. Did Big Chill show which was good but weird, then to Dalston to soundcheck for the gypsy hotel show. Back for a lay down then some brews then made our way back to the gypsy hotel in the pishing rain then blew the roof off the joint! Stayed about and got hammered, danced and got more hammered, which was nice!

Next mornin went got food, the van and our gear then parked up and had a load of stoutski in a wee jamacian boozer where they played country music with ragga rappin over the top of it, ERE ME NOW!!!!

To the Ratmobile!, then we hit Brixton, got soundchecked had some beers and played another crackin show then more beers. Went back to the hostel to find the some cocksucker double books our room with a load of other cocksuckers when we burst in pissed at 3 a.m. they were none too pleased, nor were we for that matter. This meant beds for 3 and the van for 2 unlucky sods. Talk about a bollocks.

Woke the next mornin to London rush hour traffic, Hoorah, then the best phonecall of our lives saying the ferry was delayed til 3 a.m. the following mornin, FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well onwards and upwards we drove to Wales were we booked a hotel room for 1 and went in and all had a shower (not together, but im sure some boys in the band would have liked that!). I went to me cart for a few hours as I was fucked. Boarded the boat which was like the first trip times 100, awful. Back on Irish soil the Drive home was an absolute bastard.

A Special thanks to the lads who slept in the van all weekend wile the drivers did fuck all but fight sleep and sit in an uncomfortable chair like a pair of selfish cunts!

Well, this is Captain Reno signing off and in the words of the Formidable Freddy Fisher A.K.A Halfwit "good times, MMMMMMMMMM"

UUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Gone someone write a fucking blog for fuck sake, I'm seriously bored off me tits!

'That Weekend....'

And what a weekend!

On Friday, it was the Anchor in Portstewart.
We arrived in good time, and as we were doing the sound ourselves, it was a good job. In a bar full of regulars, where live music isn't necessarily a regular thing; we were loading into a bar with people looking somewhat bemused, and for an acoustic gig; we had A LOT of gear!

Suited and booted, and ready to go, we went on and played acoustic versions of our songs; along with one or two little surprise covers! Here are a couple of pics from the night in question; to be honest, there was drink involved, we played, music happened... you get the drift!!

MOVING ON!

Early rise for us all on Saturday morning... For those who don't know halloween in Derry; it's... well Google halloween in Derry and you'll see...

We were down at Cafe DelMondo helping to get it ready for the all ages gig and the evening event.
The weather held off for a good part of the morning, however it being Ireland, that changed for a period of time.
There were 5 bands altogether (unfortunately, due to doing the door, and other various duties; I missed many of them, but heard great reports!)
The turn out could have been better to be honest; but the atmosphere was there.

The evening came, and people trickled into the cafe, and gradually it was jammed packed with whacky, bizarre and frankly amazing outfits... (this being my personal favourite)

So, the next thing we had to do, was get ourselves ready to go... So costumes ready!

Me as the legend...

Rion as the guitar virtuoso...

Wally as the silver screen goddess

Robert as... Well, a cowboy...

And our very own Marty as, The King

And all the boys (Note Rions 'Customised' Hendrix Strat!)

Well, the night went on, drink once again flowed and its safe to say that Elvis didn't leave the building for quite a while!
All in all a good night... There are a LOT of photos knocking about which I need to get through. So for now, bonne nuit & I'll chat to you all soon. There'll be an update from over the next week or so.

Enjoy,

J

Just a quick update folks on last nites gig at the Spring & Airbrake, Belfast...

We arrived around 6pm for load in then Brian sound checked us before 7.. what a guy..!
We hung out backstage talkin shit most of the night and drinkin the free beer. Odhran from We Are Resistance was showin us his beaut new fretless bass while john curled his tache in the mirror...

wasn't a bad gig, shoulda been more people there i guess but the promotion for it was last minute....

I busted my knuckles on the stage floor on the outro to BubbleHead, the last song of our set... thought it would look cool to to kneel on the ground and punch the shit outa the floor while screaming the closing lines... yeah.. i dont think i'll be doin that in 2nites show in dublin...

here's some pics..
Peace
Marty

Jaysus but what a night!
The only way I could describe the venue is a basement bar with no windows; an assortment of random retro paintings with extravigant frames on a wall which has seen better days: lit by candlelight and filled with knickknacks; from a spiderman mask with bullets hanging off it to quotes from what I think is edgar allen poe (i could be wrong) And it's one of the best places I think I've ever been in, let alone played in! You have to see it to believe it, truely an amazing place.

Load in and setup was quick, as it always is in Belfast, and the headline band, John Edgar Voe soundchecked first. They were a country rock fusion, which sounded great (check them out at www.myspace.com/johnedgarvoe) So I was eager to get going!

David Holmes was doing a DJ set in between bands, playing rockabilly, blues country exclusively. Very apt to the evening that was ahead of us

On the stage there was a screen with 'Once Upon A Time In The West' being projected onto it. With all the gear in front, it looked fucking brilliant.

We went onstage and faced the crowd of people, eager to hear some rock, country, rockabilly etc turned all the way up, and by fuck did we deliver!

Starting out with 'Master Blaster', everyone was dancing about, including us! We moved through the set swiftly, delivering every song without a falter. The two new songs, (Lonely Ranger & Reprisal) went down well; it was the first live performance of them, so naturally we wanted to see if they were 'Cigarette Songs'... They weren't!

John Edgar Voe took to the stage quickly and also played a blinder! They've only been together a short period of time, but all seasoned musicians, they sounded like they've been together for years! So they've won another fan as far as I'm concerned.

Cathy Ann Keaveney (My sister, obviously) was there, camera in hand to capture some of the night; so this would be a good time to show some of them.

So once again, thanks for reading; and enjoy!

'Paddy Glasgow's on the payroll...'

Well, thats what we say anyway!
Saturday was brilliant! We landed down shortly before 8 and got ourselves all set up. Mod (who works extremely hard, both at G'Bury and any Cellar bar gig) was setting up the stage and we ran through a couple of songs.
We were pretty excited about the video of glasgowbury; and a showing of Niall Kerr's first video about the extensive work that the rural key project does for bands and talented musicians.
Some of the interviews were hilarious!
Another video then from (who i only know as) Bob documenting the 09 antics at eagles rock. Some amount of work goes into that festival its shocking!! And a suprise video of our very own Marty & 'Swanee River's' Stevie Blues singing with the legendary Henry McCullagh! I was pretty proud of him...
I sat with The Bean on the ground (my hair can get in the way somewhat of the viewing!)
Then, out the back stage for a warm up (a smoke) and the infamous 'Jug of Life'; a mixture of I don't know what, but its green, and gets you fucked!!! That, with 8 or so beers has its effects.
We played some of our song acoustically, and got some of the folks dancing, which is always good to see. We ended as another Jug of Life was brought to the stage, and it was quickly polished off: and for me, more beers. Needless to say, I was pretty well gone by this point, and even managed to have a bit of a tumble. I'm not the most eliquent drunk to say the least! I gave the bean my phone to save any 'mishaps'.
All the lads had a great night, and rumour has it that everyone else did. Our last song, we did an extra special Whiskey Town, as it was Mr Glasgow's birthday!
So a successful night all round; and I suppose its an opportune moment to say, one... Happy Birthday Paddy! Its great to see a man take music from northern Ireland and make it something special. And once again, thank you to all involved with the rural key project, G Sessions, Glasgowbury. Without them, we wouldn't have one of the biggest festivals in Northern Ireland!

*EDIT* - Also, a huge thank you to Paddy, Stella and everyone involved in the night; and for the kindness of helping out with our trip to London.

So ladies and gents, support the scene; attend the gigs, make the music and no doubt you can consider yourselves a part of the history.
Cheers for reading,
J

Dunno why i bother.....

Well... feck it.. i need something to take my mind off the cigarette cravings, yes that's right, im off the fags since about 7.30am sunday morning..(that was the last time i had a smoke) then i staggered home and fell asleep on the sofa cause i cudn't face the stairs!!!

Last week was very eventfull indeed.. The Savage Kick Fest ran from Wed till Sunday, i was at every night except sunday, but it was a fuckin amazin' week of dirty blues and good ole Rock agus Roll..!

Loads of highlights - The Mighty Stef (love those lads), Jim Jones Revue, Paul Rooney (Urban Voodoo Machine), Casa De Chihuahua, Hillstomp... But fuck me the act that really blew my brains has gotta be Bob Log III.. How does he do that!

On Friday night we played a sold out show in Derry's Nerve Centre to around 600 kidz.. interesting night, gig went well but they gotta sort out the feckin air con in that place...

This saturday we're playin an acoustic set up in the Cellar Bar, Draperstown - where they'll be screening the dvd of this years festival.. really looking farward to that as Paddy G tellin me there's some great footage of us.
If i can stay off the fags till then i'll be pleased.... but i'll def be on the Jugs of Life on sat... you can count on it!

So, whats on the horrison for HCTLG...???
We're playin a few more festivals outa town... we got the Hard Working Class Heroes Fest in Dublin in mid october and the Redline Roots Fest at the end of october then we've got two dates for the North Coast Folk Fest around Halloween, that should be cool..

we'll be hitting London town hard in November for a slew of gigs also... keep ur eye on our tour dates for some more to be added...

Twitter...

Quite the craze now, isn't it?
Well, for those of you who read this blog who have a twitter account; go and find us and follow us! We're on a bit of an experimental stage with it, but soon enough there'll be more tweets that that of a toy shop. (see what I did there?)
Wally is currently on a bit of a holiday, and has been papped somewhere in spain eating cadburys fingers exclaiming 'They taste the same as back home...'
So its been Marty, Rion, Rob and I practicing with the faithful acoustics; getting arrangements nailed & lyrics sorted.
So, as before; for poor quality photos, senseless rambles and pointless but somewhat interesting links, as well as the odd update and relevant info; go to twitter and you shall be rewarded (with all that stuff I just said...)

Worlds worst Blogger...

Ladies and Gents; one can only apologise so many times, however I can give what I think is a viable reason as to what has been going on in the world of me not blogging enough.
The basic reason is my broadband at home has been giving me jip (and I'd like to point out for the record that British Telecom are a shower of bastards) So for a few weeks, my only means of connection to my twitter, blogger, forums and so on has been through my faithful phone. Faithful, but somewhat small to manage an entire blog. Tweeting is fine, blogging; a bit of a pest.

But I digress.

We've seemed to have knocked about one or two notes to make three more, and then added a nifty bass line with some fancy guitar licks and have come up with a couple of new songs! Alway exciting when a new song is 'born', be it from the zany world of Rions head! But without Mr McCartney's cranium, we wouldn't have such as 'The Balled of the Landed Gentry', or 'Bad Boat'; so zany or not, they seem to be classics in the making.

We've got a plethora of gigs coming up; too many to mention here, but full details on our website (and for those who haven't seen the website, www.herecomesthelandedgentry.com)

Not too much else to report to the world about the goings on from ourselves; beards are bigger than ever... And the photoshoot was ace. Some photos have been released onto the interweb (the mugshots are especially good!) but as for the rest, well they are being looked at and should be ready for the human eye in the coming weeks. For now, accept my apology and have a photo for your wall/wallpaper/screensaver/favourite frame/placemats/greetings card etc etc. Do with it as you please!

Regards

Is anybody out there?

What happened to the guy who used to do all the cool blogs. He hasn't put up a blog in 2 weeks and he promised he would give daily updates with photos and vlogs (that mean video and blogs) and he has failed to do this. Hes been leading us all on and I for one think its very unfair. This is a very un-christian thing to do. I wonder if the band are still together, for all we know they could be broke up as we havent heard any thing about the really exciting lives they live!!!

Please Mr Blogger, Im sorry i had to hack into your email account to put this post up but it had to be done so please put us out of our misery... your public needs you!!!

P.S. You are a ride and I think your writing is brilliant, and I for one would class you among the literary great such as Dostoevsky, Shakespear, Roald Dahl and Madonna!

Exciting News...

Well... Not really, but I shall be documenting things more 'photographically' (and if that isn't an amazing made up word, then I don't know what is!)
I found my good camera I bought last year for going to Paris, and it shall be attending practices, events, Marty having a sneaky pee against Big Al and all sorts of hoohaa.
Having slight issues with my lovely mac, so I'm pretty scunnered at the whole thing, so I've resorted back on the old faithful mac ibook from about 5 years ago, which is still going strong! Most of my tweets, blog updates, forum updates, emails and general surfing are being carried out on my beloved phone. My favourite gadget at the moment (overall favourite gadget? My Shure headphones! Expensive kit, but jesus they are something very special!)
Next purchase? A sexy macbook pro WITH extended warranty! When? God knows!
So firstly, Rion, tomorrow all the electric axes we use to the rehersal room. I promised a pic, and I'm going to deliver.
Expect lots of smoking band members, and if you're offended... Well, lets just say we'll cross that bridge!
Want to revive old songs, and 'Jazz' them up (rion? You get the hint there?), and give some of the older tunes a 'Second Chance'... I mean, its not as though it'd 'Break our hands' to try them out!!!
So, again I've posted quite late on in the evening, and Mr Bon Ivor is on my music player to send me off to sleep. The Bean is already in the land of nod, and so too must I.
All the best.

Highlights Shmighlights!

Jesus John, what about the cracking version of hit me baby one more time by Britney Spears, that was something else!

Here am I...

Again folks, a big sorry for not being about, I got myself all caught up in other things that are less important; but thankfully realised where my priority lies, with Here Comes The Landed Gentry!
So; an update you want, then an update you shall have ladies and gents.

The second day of the foyle festival was really great. The weather was good to the bands, and I'm raging I missed most of it. However I did catch one of my favourite songwriters of 2009, 'The Mighty Stef'. He played without his band on the night, and I have to say, I was pretty captivated by the performance. The songs seemed more haunting on his own, and his voice was more than enough to make up for the power the band normally provide. Not ashamed to admit that a song or two of his had me induce a bit of a chin wobble! Amazing talented songwriter, and I would bottle that boys voice and sell it for motivation. I went straight home after compelled to pick up my guitar and write a story. (Puts me in mind of Mick Flannery, who I've been listening to recently)

You'll all be glad to know too, that I found my fancy camera, and shall be bringing it to various Gentry events and posting them here on the blog. It also does videos; so who knows...?

The cafe DelMondo gig was amazing! We spend a while organising room for us to play, and as it was an acoustic set, Rion and I had to swap instruments throught the set.
Starting out with The Bad Boat, we were finding our feet with the levels; but managed it by the 3rd song. The crowd enjoyed the set! But my highlight was the Creedance Clearwater revival cover of 'Run Through the jungle'. I played Rions stunning Telecaster and just solo'd away, it was like being free with a band who seem to be able to read what everyone is doing. The lowpoint for me, is a song that we haven't quite found an angle for; but I'm sure we'll get there somehow.
My mum and dad were there along with the bean, and she, being the bean (who would tell us if we were crap or not) gave an 8 and a half, which is pretty amazing from her! My parents enjoyed it, and so I was happy.
After the gig, and after most people were gone, Rion, Rob (who arrived shortly after we finished playing!), Rion's missus, JAMIEEE, and the Bean all stayed about after the cafe was locked up. We spent the best part of 2 hours laughing at some of Jamies joke, which were hilarious, and was still laughing today. We drank, we smoked and conversed until the wee hours of the morning. It was really lovely, and kinda makes me more and more happy that I was asked to join this band. So, I dunno if I've ever thanked Rion, but I will sometime soon.
So before I go; Think about this. Wine, Irish coffees, comfortable seats, good food and great company. Makes playing in this band that wee bit more, je ne sais pas!!

Merci à tous. Rendez-vous à la suivante, et je vous remercie de lis.
J

Irish weather...

You'd think I'd be used to it by now; but no.
But a really great evening. There were some really great acts on and I'm raging I missed a few! Caught the end of Paddy Nash with enough time to join in with singsong along with the crowd.
The rain was out full pelt and seeing about 80 people crammed under a canopy is indeed a sight to behold!
After 10 or so minutes of getting very wet, I nipped back into the Cafe for some amazing steak wine gravy potato stuff (can't mind the name of it... Rion? Help me out here!!)
A mate of mine stopped me mid-feast and exclaimed 'You's boys are on now, they're onstage!'
Needless to say, I finished my dinner, then casually wandered out to see what was happening. Wally was onstage; and it was only Keith... So I stayed about, listened to a new song of his, then back in I went.
When we finally were set-up and ready, the rain hadn't relented and it was pissing buckets. But we trooped on, and the spirit was there! Opening with Baditude got the crowd from the shelter and right up front for a dance.
To be fair, I can't remember the set much (I was forced beers), but I used the squeeze box the Rion got me for the first time... I don't think I did too bad for a beginner, but I'm gonna work at it.
We finished off the night with Whiskey Town, and everyone was leaping about. Good craic, good crowd and good times.
Packing up acoustic gear is brilliant. 5 minutes, and you're done!
Balkin Alien Sound headlined the night, and they were phenominal! Never seen a band as tight as them boys! Everyone was going nuts, and in the rain, it was something else!
So home again for me; I've had a pretty exausting few day's and am looking forward to not being outside for at least 8 hours.
Should be there tomorrow, so more then. But for now... Zzzzzzz

The cat's yawn...

Jesus Christ! I don't think I've laughed as hard in all my life! I'm not going to go into detail, but I think I laughed for about half an hour straight!!!
I think I've pulled a muscle or something while I was at it...
That and the fact the Rob's and Marty's elbows were seperated at birth made a relatively mundane Monday into a fucking hilarious one!!!
So again, another acoustic practice; which went well. Two more of them and we'll be on tiptop form for Saturday. My wee Martin acoustic has been transformed into a bit of a monster, with a pickup ducktaped on and the lead ducktaped around the back. Same as the banjo... who'd have known that a beer bottletop would make such a difference! Cheers Conor for yer veg and bottletop innovation!
Apart from that, looking into coconut oil for beards (I'm not kidding!) Apparently, it's good for it... The internet was made for beard forums and a video of a guy catching a laptop with his arse. (Youtube it now, I promise you won't regret, nor forget it...)
Anyhow, off to bed to try and rest my poor side after this evenings antics...
G'night
J

Sorry folks...

Been off the radar for a bit; so I thought I'd stick up a quick update about what's happening in our little world.
Wally & Marty have been organising the Foyle Folk festival, so we've had a few day's away from eachother's company for a while, but we found some time and got together tonight and had ourselves an acoustic practice. The abuse flew, the grief was knockin about and the craic was 90, so no change! Hoping to get a couple more of them before Saturday.
On the way home, for some reason unknown to me, Rion had the theme tune to Hong Kong Phooey on a mix CD... You would swear it was Marty singing!! Been trying to find out who sang it, but with no avail. Good for a laugh, so go and listen to it!
Hopefully there'll be more regular posts here, and vlogs are being looked into; so watch this... Well not this, but keep your eyes peeled.
On a final note, sad to hear Les Paul died during the week. To be fair, I personally wasn't a fan of his music although he was a great guitar player his entire life, but respected the man for more or less inventing the basis for the electric guitar. I don't own a gibson les paul, although dreamt of owning a tobacco burst custom, along with an ES355 (guitar heads assemble...)
So, although this will fall among many farewells on the internet; here's one from me. Cheers Les, well done & good man.

Merch...

We've got it!
I'm going to look into zippo's too I think; they'll be expensive I reckon. Maybe down the line then (and don't worry lefties; I would make sure there were left handed ones too... ask Rion...)
So merch ideas! What could there be? I'm sure that some of you have an idea or four, so let us know for God's sake!

Futtering about on my beautiful 12 string today (thanks again Conzo), and decided to try different tunings. It's a bit of a bastard, but I ended up with some nice sounds. Sounded a bit singer song writer(y?) so I don't think it'd be HCTLG material; but I've been listening quite a bit to Bon Iver and Nick Drake.... All finger picking detuned stuff, again a bastard on a 12 string, but good when it works.
I promised a pic of our guitars for any guitar geeks out there; but you'll have to wait until they're all in a room at the same time. Off the top of my head, there are about 8 between us! Too much? NEVER!

Just one more thing... If you read these blogs, but haven't looked at our website, and downloaded our FREE song; then you're a bunch of berts!
If you no longer want to be regarded as a complete bert, and feel your human rights have been affected by being referred to as a complete bert; remember this... Bert's don't have human rights, so stop being really really bert and go to www.herecomesthelandedgentry.com, and download the free single.
If you do, I want pictures of people emailed to us holding a sign saying, 'I am not a bert anymore' (unless your name is bert, which in that case... Sorry to say that irrespective of downloading the song or not, you'll always technically be a Bert, and have no human rights, but a sign saying 'I am Bert, but have the songs' will give us a laugh)
There you have it... In simple terms: Reading this? Don't have Lightness & Weight or/and Rockabilly Boogie?
You are a Bert.
(And Keith... I want a picture, because I've got a wile feeling you're a bert)
G'bye!

56789...

Today was a special day! The numbers are relevant.
The date was 07/08/09, and at six minutes past 5, I had myself a little nerd moment, and was all excited for the whole minute; the reason? The respective numbers read 5-6-7-8-9!

I know it's nothing to do with the Gentry per se, but I was pretty chuffed about it altogether!

As far as the Gentry goes, we're gonna be back in the rehersal space together soon, and therefore may be a little video treat on its way!

Thats it for now folks, I've been off the airwaves for a while, but I should be back much more often!

HCTLGTV...

Delectable little treats appear when I log into the blogger every now and again!
Now our own little TV station? Well... that is something! Looks like the work of Mr Mort Van Cleef; and I'm enjoying the surprises!
Pressure on us lads to make some little video blogs too; I think they're called 'vlogs' in the world where condensed words seem to be standardised. I must make a few up myself... (door hinge = dinge, light bulb = lulb, rock band = rand, jive and jazz = jizz?... I could go on)
So whatdoya reckon; HCTLG blogs, exclusives? Conversations? Sneaky recordings of practice room arguments (not that we have that many...)
All these sound good in theory; but there is a slight problem; Marty is terribly shy in social situations (we sometimes find him in the corner of the backstage sitting down reading Harry Potter and dressed like a wizard, and we have to drag him out to the stage), Rion has Tourettes (although I'd call it passion), the hair to face ratio is all wrong for me, Rob has a funny looking moustache which may come across strange on camera and Wally's various voices may appear along with his middle finger; and offend somewhat.
I need to get these problems solved before venturing into this video adventure (vadventure?); but I need everyone possible to comment and let us know if you want it! Yes you, and not just the usual suspects; EVERYONE who reads it has gots to say yay or nay...
So whats it to be?

Mum's the word...

Recovering from the antics at the weekend... It's taking me a while! Longer than expected, but you end up appreciating showers, toilets, heating and a cosy bed more after a weekend in the mountains!
Haven't been chatting to the guys since coming back, but I reckon they're in the same boat as me.
It was nice to see my Mum and Dad; hadn't seen them really in two weeks!

When I got in the door, my mum asked 'How was it?' I handed her the computer and she read the blog! Handy, blogs are... Saved me about 15 minutes to chat about other things!!
I'm kidding of course! I told her all the craic, and then came the infamous question no son wants to hear about things they write on the internet...

'How do I bookmark this page?'

*christ...

So, anyone who reads this blog, mind your fucking language, my mum and dad are probably reading it!

Next up, Roarin Meg festival!

I've got to get the muck off my boots. Speaking of, I'm gonna post a pic of my DM boots that saved my feet from all sorts of unpleasantries... They're all covered in mud and sheep shit...) (sorry mum)

Glasgowbury... The Story (and Aftermath)

First of all,
I couldn't get a good enough signal to post in the mountains, so humble apologies; however, WHAT A FUCKING WEEKEND!!!
Me, The Bean, The Meek, The Port & Banana arrived down at around 7 on Friday, pitched the tents in a matter of an hour and got settled in for the midgies to feast on us. It was cold enough, but no rain thankfully. Rion along with his Missus (whose Catalan stew saved a few bellies... Amazing chef!) Hollie, Marty and JAAMIEEE arrived shortly after to put up their sleeping quarters.
Rion, Marty and the crew left to go to a warm bed, hot showers and more importantly, CLEAN TOILETS! Me and my crew stayed to battle the elements head on with warm cardigans, a warm blanket and the smallest picnic blanket I've ever seen!
We had a few drinks, then went off to bed quite early; I had a big day ahead of me, and wanted to make sure I was ready for anything!! So sleeping tablet, and bed for me.

The next day, we woke around 7am... Restless enough sleep because of the cold; but a sleep was a sleep. The Bean packed LOADS of foodstuff for us, and had a French breakfast. Coffee, Croissants, Pain Au Chocolat and orange juice! On a fucking mountain?? Amazing stuff! The day was starting out to be a lot lot warmer, so that put us all in top form.

That was us ready for the day ahead. The Q and their girlfriends arrived shortly after... We helped them with their tents and had a laugh. We mingled about, talked to some other people we knew, and before we knew it; it was 1:00pm! Time flies! The festival area opened at 12! We got our sweaters, jumpers, cardigans and what have you, plus stuck a couple of rain macs into The Bean's bag... just in case!

On our way up, we met Reno and Dermot carrying a big tent bag; which I am assuming was filled with drink, (and lots of it) as it took the two of them to carry it!

We made it there just in time to catch the last couple of songs from Balkan Alien Sound, who blew the Eagles Rock stage away with their high powered gypsy folk which had even me dancing; a difficult feat at the best of times!
We took a wander around the area, seeing the stalls selling beer,Coffee, Merchandise and food. I then nipped backstage to familiarise myself with the layout, and where our stage was and so forth. Bumped into 'We Are Resistance', an extremely talented band hailing from the Draperstown area. There was a lot of beard complimenting and beard rubbing!

Back on the main site, we watched a couple more acts, and The Bean and I headed back to the campsite for a little rest; and also to get my suit sorted for the show.
The campsite was now STUFFED with people & tents! One guy thought he was onto a winner by booting a rugby ball as far as possible, and it landing on tents. People with no sense fuck me off; but anyway...
We got back to the tent just as the rain began... Damn shame! It was a great morning. Ah well; its Ireland...Rain comes with the country.

We made it back to the festival site to see our boys 'The Q' (interesting fact? Rion drummed temporarily for them about 4 months ago). They were immense! Guitars up full, and Pablo was the frontman of frontmen. (Not as good as Marty though cause he's just class, but I'm always concentrating on playing to take notice!)

The Q finished, and outside was PISSING DOWN! Really heavy rain; so macs on, and back to the campsite. The catalan stew hit the spot, and we had a few drinks. The rain eased up a bit; so we ventured out once more up to the Spurs of Rock stage to see our good friends, 'The Mighty Stef'; who were unbelievable as always. They dedicated my favorite song of theirs to the Gentry boys, and there was a roar from behind us!! Needless to say, I got nervous at that point. After the Stef, we had to run back stage to Mr Stephen McCauley for a radio interview with the BBC. We clambered into the back of a van, Wally at the helm and drove as far away from Lafaro's sound as possible so we could record a little tune for Mr McCauley. We did a bizarre rendition of 'Highbrow' and were sped back to the backstage area for Spurs of Rock; just to catch 'Swanee River' start. Jesus the crowd was enormous. How the fuck were we going to follow them!??

We watched and waited; and anxiously got our gear ready for a swift changeover; and stood at the wings. Swanee finished off their epic 'Baby Better Lady' then it was mad dives to get the drum kit changed, keyboards up,amplifiers heated and guitars tuned. With a quick sound check from Paul Sheerin, we ran back to the van and got changed into our suits... Then the madness began...

Marty walked onstage to an enormous roar from the crowd and began Leadbelly; to which we followed. I'd forgotten my nerves; strapped on my guitar (yes ladies and gents... My babies are back!) and Rion, Wally and I joined Marty in the song. With the count in from Wally, I hit the D chord and it almost blew my head clean off!! What a noise!! After a lot of jumping around, we moved straight into Johnny Hero. The photographer was right in front of me; and as we started the chorus, I leapt into the air, jumped back and promptly rolled about the ground! I kept playing, and the flashes of cameras made me think 'Jesus... I need to make this look intentional...' The ground was muddy, and some was on my shoes, so what I actually did was slip, but The Bean told me afterwards that it looked completely intentional! So job done as far as that was concerned.
Next up was Baditude. Ballsy as buck and again, a lot of leaping. Marty giving it his all onstage. He was going nuts too! We had a ball.
We began the changearound... Wally up front on harmonica, and Rion on the drums; and we brought onstage Mr Conor O'Kane for 'Troublesome Woman Blues'... Yet another crowdpleaser. The night went on, we sang Whiskey Town with Mr Keith Harkin on guitar, and to 'Bubblehead' ending on the accappela version of Leadbelly. The crowd were all singing along, and again we had Keith onstage singing with us, Paddy Nash, and God knows who else!
We left the stage with chants of 'ONE MORE TUNE! ONE MORE TUNE!' behind us.
We stood at the backstage, looked at each other and took to the stage one more time, blasting out 'The Ballad of The Landed Gentry'...
We then left on one of the biggest highs I think I've ever had... Robert was leaping about, Wally was buzzing and Rion, Marty, Dermot & Conor were just high with excitement... And that was it.

I ran around to find the Bean, and brought her and The Meek back with me. It was 11:40, and The Bean's favourite local band ASIWYFA were due on stage in 20 mins. We had to get all our gear into the van, leave space for a bed for Wally and Henry McCullagh was due to go on any minute. We broke the gear down and left it backstage; and The Bean, The Meek & I ran to see ASIWYFA.
I managed to see about 15 minutes before having to go and start loading gear, when it transpired that people were going on stage with ASIWYFA for the last song to sing...
I got The Meek and The Bean, ran to the stairs, and watched the enormous crowd. Everyone was on stage ready to go, then we got the go ahead.
Out we went, clapping our hands and singing to the crowd! It was fucking unreal! The Beans face was all lit up, really having a blast! It was pretty special.

When we got back to the Spurs of Rock stage, it turned out that Stevie from Swanee and our very own Big Marty were onstage with Henry McCullagh (from Wings/ Joe Cocker's band) singing 'Little help from my friends'!! Jesus! I don't think even Marty was expecting that!(***edit by Marty - Yes John I knew about this weeks before as it was arranged by Dermot [Mod] and Paddy G.***) AND they sang 'You've really got me' by The Kinks!

That was the end of the Glasgowbury festival. The gear was packed, the crowds were leaving and we were on a big big high.

On the way back to the campsite, there was a lot of people who recognised me from the band, and were shaking my hand, telling me that the band were brilliant. I found it strange. Can't help but wonder if people would talk to me had I not been in a band..

Back at the campsite, the heavens opened and it poured and poured. People took refuge in their tents; including me. Across the way, was Big Marty's big TeePee, with what must have been about 30 people in it; and him and Wally were doing an impromptu gig with Stevie Blues. I was happy listening... I was exhausted, and content.

We all went to bed at around 4.30am. My sleeping pill worked withing minutes; and that was my Glasgowbury 09.

A lot of work is put into that festival every year, and its growing; and if it wasn't for people like Stella Glasgow, Paddy Glasgow and all the G'Bury crew, it would turn into a monster; but with people like that in control; it'll always be the best festival in the world and the biggest highlight in any Irish musician's year.

Cheers for reading

Glasgowbury!!

It is here! And i'm being eaten alive by bugs!
Last night sleep was restless, about 2 or 3 hours in total. It was freezing, so 4 layers of clothes!
People still arriving, and someone thought he was onto a winner with a big annoying drum... Needless to say, the drummer was pretty good.
I'll try and post throught the day and add photos from my phone.

Roundabouts, veg & music...

'What's your favourite roundabout?' was the topic of conversation on the journey home. I enjoy wee moments like that, just random conversations! Moving swiftly onto veg with the exceptionally talented Conor, who is a guest banjo banjo...ist(?).
Not a packed gig tonight, but a good wee warm up for the mighty Glasgowbury. And, I got my guitboxes back! Good times.
Well, a short post tonight, because its 4 am, and I'm sure I'm speaking for the rest of the guys by saying I'm all wonk out!

A large, please...

T-shirts are ready and getting picked up tomorrow! Mr McCartney called, and asked what size I'd like... I asked for medium, Rion said large! I honestly thought medium would be good, but The Bean put me straight and told me a medium was too small for me! And it's rare that The Bean is wrong!
Wishful thinking on my behalf I suppose...

So I'll be sporting my HCTLG t-shirt in no time at all! I think the badges are arriving too. Just in time for G'Bury. Marvelous!

My Telecasters are still with our (still unknown to him) guitar tech. Rion got his back today, and told me that they are absolutely amazing! Like different guitars!! Christ I can't wait till Thursday to get'em back again! I'll stick a picture up of all the axes the Gentry use when they're united again... You'll be surprised!
I borrowed my mate's Tele, but really... it isn't the same; a bed is a bed, but nothing is better than your own bed. I'm sure you know what I mean. Nice of him though!

The next addition to this blog, I'm thinking of adding a Google search engine... Its more so that folks (if they want, and like these bloggy things) can have it as a home page, and use it like regular Google!
Let me know what you reckon about this, as if it ain't gonna be used, then there ain't no point!

Well, that is that. I'm hoping this thundery weather will be gone by the weekend! Its bloody grey and lashing with rain! Practice tomorrow, and another day closer to G'Bury...
It'll be a hoot! Come rain or shine!!
For now, enjoy a 'Small but MASSIVE' Marty!

Exhausted!

Not even a high powered, full rock gig, but the little acoustic one! And I'm shattered today! Getting old doesn't get easy!

We left Derry at about 7, minus Wally who has the swine flu (or just the flu, but you never know!!) and minus Rob.
Rion wasn't best pleased with the lack of sandwiches that the garage had, so he went hungry for the journey. A bag of crisps and a bounty helped through that tough time.
We got there with 20 minutes to spare; time enough for a quick acoustic practice.
We didn't have high hopes for the gig, as the last acoustic gig we did was a bit of a disaster... But we battled onward. The venue was scattered with sofas & chairs, some people sitting on blankets on the floor with crackers, cheese & wine (Rions eyes lit up!) The room was lit with candle light, and looked amazing.
So with no mics, amps or anything plugged in, we chatted to the crowd, and started a rendition of Lightness & Weight. A good response to what I felt was a good version. This boosted confidence all round! This confidence quickly dissipated as both Marty and myself BOTH forgot the words to Johnny Hero! But we managed to up the ante by promptly forgetting the second verse!! I think we need lyric sheets... Quote from Mr McCartney;'thats what happens when you've got 100 songs to choose from!
We ended with acapellabelly, which everyone there got into.

The long and short is, we got an amazing response, and we walked away on a high.
I ended up having hicburps (I burp EVERYTIME I hiccup) and now my chest is killing me!
So that is that; for another day...For now, enjoy a picture of me along with another me from 5 years ago, when I went back to stop myself eating a full king size bag of peanuts.

A hard day's night...

What the hell does that mean?? Hard days night... If you think about it, it doesn't make much sense. Its like saying 'I'm off to the pub yesterday'... Never noticed until I wrote it!
Anyway... A few idiotic phone snaps of the rehearsal tonight. Went well, some spontaneous jamming, just making stuff up and fluttering about. The craic was good, and a bit of it was me and Wally having an ould chop busting session! Good times!
So my borrowed guitbox was Mr McCartneys loverly blue Yamaha. I miss my Telecasters loads and loads though. Strange that I've grown SO fond of what is essentially a piece of wood! But I do miss them.
Rob has been blending in well; I'm sure he must have found it awkward at the start, but he's one of the lads.
Just needs his good suit and fighting boots ready for the penultimate gig... Need I say it again? 6 days to go!! A special version of Whiskey Town especially Mr Glasgow! Wait and see, ladies and gents, wait and see!

The radio session went well apparently. I wasn't able to go to it, but I'll get a listen at some point I'm sure.
So its off later to Belfast for an acoustic session. No amps, no lighting, no effects... Just good old fashioned sitting around playing to people in candlelight. Sounds good to me!
Well, thats me for now. Enjoy a couple of poor quality pics as promised!
